KABUL (Pajhwok): The construction of 650 houses for earthquake-affected people of Zinda Jan district has been initiated in western Herat province.

A few weeks ago, more than 2,500 people, including children and women, lost their lives and thousands were injured in a series of earthquakes in Herat.

Maulvi Ahmadullah Muttaqi, information and culture director, told the inaugural ceremony the houses would be built in 45 days.

He said the project would cost 140 million afghanis, which would be paid by the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. Each house will have two living rooms, a verandah and a bathroom.

Muttaqi, who is also spokesperson for the Herat Earthquake Relief Commission, said the houses were being built in 15 villages of Zinda Jan district, where the quake had people’s houses were destroyed or damaged during the previous earthquake.

Mir Rahman, one of engineers of the construction of these houses, said that these houses would be built in good quality.

He added that during the construction of the houses, the people of the area would also get employment opportunities.

Maulvi Abdullah, a resident of Zinda Jan, told Pajhwok seven members of his family had been killed in the earthquake. He is currently living in a tent with three members of his family.

He asked the government and aid agencies to provide them shelter before the winter.
