TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): Seven small water dams are being constructed at a cost of 18 million afghanis in central Uruzgan province to deal with increasing drought by storing rainwater.

Officials, who addressed a ceremony in this regard, said the check dams were being constructed on the prime minister’s order.

Uruzgan governor Maulvi Mohammad Ali Jan said the check dams would help prevent flooding and also increase underground water level in six districts.

He said the canal will irrigate hundreds of acres of barren land next year.

The dams’ project is funded by the Ministry of Agriculture and will provide employment to dozens of people..

Abdul Salam, a resident of Chinartu district, said check dams prevented floods which caused huge financial and life losses in Afghanistan.

The implementation of the project has thrilled residents.
