LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Residents of southern Helmand province are demanding more distribution centres of electronic identity cards while local officials say they are striving to address the problem.

Only two ID card distribution centres are functional in Helmand province and they cannot meet the needs of the entire population.

Siddiqullah, a resident of Sangin district, who had come to Lashkargah city to obtain an electronic ID card, said the government should activate such centers in districts as well.

He added: “Every time we come from our district, we pay 1100 afghanis transport fare and 600 afghanis are charged for filling out the tazkira form. If ID car distribution centers are opened in districts, it will save people’s money and time.”

He said due to high number of applicants, one had to wait for seven months to get an identity card.

Hazrat Siddiq, from Marja district, said four months had passed, but his turn to get the ID card was yet to come.

He said: “There is a lot of traffic here, people don’t get appointments, residents of remote districts spend the night in hotels in the city and the price of ID card has also reached 600 afghanis. This is a big problem.”

He requested a cut in the electronic ID card fee and the establishment of distribution centers in ndistricts.

Ahmed, a resident of Musa Qala district, said: “I have not been able to register my name for several weeks.”

Hafiz Muhammad Rabbani, head of the Statistics and Information in Helmand, confirmed the problems of people in obtaining electronic ID cards and said efforts were underway to open a center in Musa Qala district.

He said: “There is a lot of rush, but my request is that people should show courage and follow the schedule. We are trying to open centers for electronic ID cards in the districts, one each in Lashgargah and Musa Qala districts.”
