ATLANTA (Pajhwok): Former president Hamid Karzai has discussed with the EU envoy and the UN Secretary General special representative the upcoming Doha meeting on Afghanistan.

At a meeting with UN’s Special Coordinator Feridun Sinirlioğlu, the former president hailed the diplomat’s independent assessment of the situation in Afghanistan as a realistic report.

In a statement from his office on Wednesday, Karzai said Sinirlioğlu’s efforts and successful diplomacy led to the achievement.

The two sides held a detailed discussion on the upcoming meeting in Doha — an event seen as important for Afghanistan.

They hoped Afghans, the participating countries and the world would be able to take positive steps for the brighter future of Afghanistan.

The two-day meeting, convened by the UN secretary-general, is scheduled to be held on February 18 and 19.

According to another report, the ex-president also met with European Union’s Special Representative Tomas Niklasson in Kabul.

EU’s Charge d’Affaires Raffaella Iodice was also present on this occasion.

The upcoming Doha gathering and UN’s recent report on Afghanistan came up for a detailed discussion at the meeting.

Karzai thanked the EU for its humanitarian aid to Afghans and hoped results of the summit in the Qatar capital would prove positive for the country.

A day earlier, Sinirlioğlu, Niklasson had separately discussed the Doha meeting with Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) officials.
