KABUL (Pajhwok): Work on the ambitious CASA-1000 electricity project will resume in May, Da Afghanistan Breshna Shirkat (DABS) said on Saturday.

DABS wrote on its X handle that work would resume on CASA-1000 project in May after a two-year long delay.

The power utility said work on the 1.2 billion project designed to export excess hydropower from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to Pakistan through Afghanistan would be completed until 1404 solar year.

It added work on the 1,270km power transmission line was resuming following efforts of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) and cooperation of some regional countries.

A joint meeting was held between representatives of the World Bank, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Pakistan on March 7 and 8 in Istanbul, Turkey, regarding the resumption of work on the largest electricity transmission project, DABS explained.

Afghanistan will construct a 580 km portion of the line from northern Kunduz to Torkham in eastern Nangarhar province.

The CASA-1000 aims to transfer surplus electricity from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan to Pakistan through Afghanistan and its work has been nearly completed in the three countries.

Earlier, the Ministry of Finance had announced that the World Bank will reopen its office in Kabul and resume work on incomplete projects in Afghanistan, including CASA-1000.
