KABUL (Pajhwok): Former president Hamid Karzai has once again called on the Islamic Emirate to allow girls to go to schools and universities so the country could progress and compete with other countries.
Soon after returning to power in 2021, the Islamic Emirate banned girls above the sixth grade from going to schools and then extended the ban to university education.
Karzai wrote on his X page: “The new academic year begins with the arrival of the new year (1403) and usually these days for our children, girls and boys are like Eid days to learn knowledge and thus serve their families and the country.”
Karzai believed education was the way of survival, development, honor and freedom of every human society.
According to him, if schools and universities are opened for girls, the country will be freed from the need of foreigners and will become self-sufficient and competitive.
The Islamic Emirate has repeatedly said the ban on girls high and university education is temporary and girls will be allowed to study once a suitable environment is created.
