3 check dams worth 20m afs completed in Helmand

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Three check dams have been constructed at a cost of 20 million afghanis in southern Helmand province, an official said on Wednesday.

Helmand governor’s spokesman Mohammad Qasim Riaz told Pajhwok Afghan News to store flood water, three check dams had been constructed and put into service in Musa Qala and Nawzad districts.

He said the projects consumed 20 million afghanis and took one year to complete.

He added the completion of the check dams raised the underground water level.

Meanwhile, Abdul Sattar, an engineer with the construction company, said: “One check dam was constructed in Aliabad area of Nawzad district and has the capacity to store 420,000 cubic meter of water.”

He said the second dam was constructed in Landnawi area of Musa Qala district and has the capacity to store 160,000 cubic meters of water and the third one could store 500,000 cubic meter of water.

Local residents were pleased with the construction of the check dams and called for implementation of more such projects.

The Ministry of Water and Energy (MoWE) has also announced a plan to build 155 check dams in a number of provinces this year.
