Floods: Rescue teams sent to affected provinces

KABUL (Pajhwok): After severe flooding played havoc in multiple provinces including northern Baghlan province, several rescue teams have been dispatched to the affected provinces.

Since yesterday, severe floods hit northern Baghlan, Takhar, Badakhshan and western Ghor and Herat provinces, causing both life and financial losses to the local residents.

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) said its air force rescued a large number of people stuck in flooded areas and transported 100 injured to military hospital of the Omari 217 Corps for medical treatment.

The MoD said a state of emergency had been declared in floods affected areas and the distribution of food package, medicines and first aid services continued.

Simultaneously, medical teams from Maiwand and Kabul University Hospitals had also reached the affected areas to help the survivors.

Earlier, a 30-member health team was sent from Parwan province to help the people in Baghlan.

MoD spokesman Mufti Abdul Matin Qani regretted recent floods related incidents in Baghlan, Badakhshan, Herat and Ghor provinces.

Qani said: “Besides their own duties, the security forces will stand with the local residents to recover the dead bodies, evacuate the injured to hospitals and work for shelter and deliver food and other items.”

IEA spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid also expressed his sympathy on his X handle with the affected people and directed the MoD and the Ministry of Interior (MoI) to help the affected people.

Referring to recent floods in the country, former president Hamid Karzai hoped that national traders and humanitarian organizations would help the affected people across the country.

Former peace and reconciliation chief Dr. Abdullah Abdullah also sympathized with the affected families and called on humanitarian organizations to help them.

The Interior ministry spokesman said to make sure the delivery of aid, links have been created for coordination with all helping sectors.

The Disaster Management Authority wrote on its X handle that a consultative meeting took place to find resources for helping the affected people and preparing an emergency budget in this regard.
