HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Expired and low quality medicines and food items weighting 60 tons were set alight in this capital city of western Herat province, an official said on Friday.
Saboor Ahmad Khaliqi, Food Inspector at Herat Food and Drug Administration, said they collected 60 tons of outdated and low-quality drugs and food items from shops and pharmacies in Herat city during the last three months and torched them last afternoon.
He added the items torched included 3,400 types of medicines worth 35 million afghanis.
On the other hand, health officials say using expired and low-quality products causes various diseases and ask people to check expiry dates on such items.
About three months ago, the same department torched about 65 tons of expired medicines and poor quality food items.
