KABUL (Pajhwok): Russian Ambassador in Kabul Dmitry Zhirnov says his country may open more consulates in Afghanistan.

Moscow does not rule out opening more consulates in Afghanistan in the future, Zhrinov said in an interview with TASS news agency.

He said: “So far, there is no need for this but nothing can be ruled out in the future.”

As the two nations established diplomatic relations in 1919; Russia set up its embassy in Kabul and a consulate in Mazar-i-Sharif.

“We also opened consulates in Herat City and Maimana, and planned to open a consulate in Jalalabad,” he said in response to a query.

However, he also reiterated the Foreign Ministry’s recommendation that Russian nationals refrain from visiting Afghanistan for private purposes due to the tense security situation in the country.

On Saturday the ambassador said Russia would focus on its own interests in the matter of recognition and exclusion of the Taliban movement from the list of banned organisations.
