HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Office bearers of the Calligraphers and Painters Association in western Herat say the government should preserve and promote the art of calligraphy.
They highlighted Herat's significant role in the development of Nastaliq script and noted that 46 types of Islamic and historical styles were currently practiced in the province.
Abdul Jalil Tawana, head of the association, emphasized that the art of calligraphy had a history spanning over a thousand years in Herat.
The association currently includes twelve master calligraphers and fifty elite students who are dedicated to advancing and maintaining this traditional art
Professors within the association stress that government support and public exhibitions are crucial for expanding the reach and impact of calligraphy.
Zahiruddin, an active artist, underlined efforts to introduce many young people to the art and preserve this cultural heritage.
Students also echo the need for both government and public support, suggesting that promoting calligraphy through exhibitions and encouraging youth’s involvement are essential for its survival.
Sediq Ahmadyar, a student, pointed out that the survival of this art relied on the efforts of culturally engaged individuals and the need for greater promotion and sales through exhibitions.
The Department of Information and Culture of Herat province also supports the call for preservation, recognizing calligraphy as a vital Islamic art.
Maulvi Hamidullah Ghyasi, head of the department, reaffirmed the commitment to supporting artists and reviving this cherished art.
