GARDEZ (Pajhwok): Construction work has been launched on two canals at a cost of more than $100,000 in southeastern Paktia province, an official said on Tuesday.
Head of Natural Disaster Management Authority Maulvi Nesar Ahmad Nejat told Pajhwok Afghan News these projects had been funded by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Japan.
“The canals worth $105,000 are being built in Choni and Khetaba villages of Gardez city and have provided jobs to dozens of people.”
The canals are 720 meters long, two meters high and 2.6 meters deep, he added.
On the other hand, residents are happy with the implementation of these projects.
Zarin, a resident of Choni area, told Pajhwok earlier flash floods destroyed residential houses and dozens acres of agricultural crops every year.
According to him, hundreds of residential houses and dozens acres of agricultural crops will be protected from floods by the construction of these canals.
Recent flash floods caused financial and life losses in different areas of the province.
