HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): A week-long exhibition of handicrafts and art works was inaugurated in western Herat province on Monday to commemorate the Tourism Week.
This exhibition was opened in the presence of General Consul and head of Turkish Cohesion and Cooperation Agency Arafat Deniz and Herat officials.
The handicrafts and arts of artists from four provinces have been showcased on 100 booths, with 50 of them belonging to women.
Information and Culture Director Maulvi Ahmadullah Muttaqi said the examples of all arts and crafts were displayed in two separate sections for women and men.
The participants from Herat, Ghor, Badghis, Farah and Nimroz provinces attended the exhibition, Muttaqi added.
Arafat Deniz explained Turkey was working on more support programs in agreement with the government to promote Afghan handicrafts and artworks.
This exhibition was held to attract foreign and domestic tourists and also to introduce handicrafts and products of the province, head of tourism of the Department Maulvi Rahmatullah Mohammadi said.
According to Mohammadi, people can visit the exhibition for free and buy the items they need to support the artists.
On the other hand, participants welcomed the holding of the exhibition, but emphasized on setting up more exhibitions at national and international levels to introduce handicrafts and industries.
Farhad, an exhibitor, told Pajhwok Afghan News the provision of such opportunities motivated artists.
Farhad asked people to visit the exhibition and buy something from them in order to support local handicrafts and artists.
The exhibition is funded by TIKA office and is being held in cooperation with the Information and Culture Department.
