KABUL (Pajhwok): UN refugee agency chief Filippo Grandi says more than 123 million people around the world are now displaced due to war, repression, poverty and climate change.
Addressing more than 100 diplomats and ministers in Geneva at UNHCR's annual meeting, Filippo Grandi said strict measures by some countries to control their borders were no solution to the migration crisis, Reuters reported.
Grandi explained: “We must seek to address the root causes of displacement, and work toward solutions”.
He said countries should seek in finding fair, fast and lawful asylum schemes to solve the refugee problem.
In the same speech, he warned that in Lebanon, where more than one million people have fled their homes due to a growing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah that 270,000 had already fled to Syria.
Recently, many countries sought to find a way to strengthen their border security and prevent the entry of illegal immigrants.
