Snowfall, storms close Salang highway for heavy vehicles

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Public Works (MoPW) has shut the Salang highway for heavy passenger vehicles until December 24 to protect people and their goods, an official said on Tuesday.

On X, MoPW spokesman Ashraf Haqshanas wrote the busy highway had been shut for heavy vehicles until December 24 due to snowfall and storms.

He said the Salang road had been shut for trucks, passenger buses and military vehicles to protect people and their belongings and prevent accidents.

Small high-speed vehicles, however, were allowed to travel the sub-road in both directions, Haqshanas explained.

MoPW urged drivers to equip their vehicles put on chains, warm winter clothing and other carry necessary equipment and observe traffic laws, exercise extreme caution and pay close attention to instructions from officials.
