Address problems of Afghan refugees, Iran urged

KABUL (Pajhwok): Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai has urged Iran to address the challenges faced by Afghan refugees in the neighbouring country.

He issued the call at a meeting with newly-appointed Iranian Ambassador to Afghanistan Alireza Bigdeli, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) wrote on its X handle.

Stanikzai welcomed Iran’s new ambassador, hoping political, cultural and economic ties between Kabul and Tehran would be further strengthened during his diplomatic mission.

He voiced concern at the challenges faced by Afghan refugees in Iran, stressing the need for effective measures to address the issues and provide facilities for movement between the two countries.

For his part, Alireza Bigdeli reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to enhancing its political, economic and cultural relations with Afghanistan

He emphasised on maintaining and further cementing bilateral relations by utilising all available opportunities, the MoFA statement added.

Iranian police have recently increased the harassment and deportation of Afghan refugees, prompting calls for humane treatment of migrants.
