GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): A Ramadan volleyball tournament, featuring 23 teams, commenced in capital of southern Ghazni province on Monday, an official announced.
Sports and Physical Training Director Bilal Mujahid told Pajhwok Afghan News the tournament, which got underway today, will continue for a month.
He said Zaitoon team defeated Omid Wali Asr team by 6-1 in the opening match of the tournament.
He explained the event was aimed at providing healthy source of entertainment for people during the holy month, nurturing athletic talent, encouraging youth’s participation in sports, and promoting teamwork and unity.
Meanwhile, participating players also voiced satisfaction over the organisation of the event.
Ahmad Shah, a player from Omid Wali Asr team, urged the officials concerned to arrange such events in other regions of the province.
He believed such events could provide recreational opportunities for youth and motivate them to stay away from idleness, drug addiction, and other harmful activities while engaging in sports.
Earlier, a Ramadan cricket tournament was also held in the province.
