GARDEZ (Pajhwok): Construction work has been initiated on three development projects estimated to cost 150,000 US dollars in the capital of southeastern Paktia province, an official announced on Wednesday.
Gardez Mayor Maulvi Habib-ur-Rahman Mansouri told the inaugural ceremony that two roadside drainage systems and a clean drinking water supply network were being constructed in the city.
He said construction work was kicked off on a 700-metre long roadside drainage system near the old provincial headquarters in the first police district of the provincial capital. This project aims to prevent road damage and improve urban infrastructure.
He continued work was also initiated on a water supply network in 4th police district of Gardez city, which will provide access to clean drinking water for 110 households.
Funded by the United Nations Habitat Organisation, these projects would cost $150,000, he explained.
Meanwhile, residents of the provincial capital voiced satisfaction over the launch of work on these projects.
One resident, Rahim, told Pajhwok that these projects would ease many difficulties faced by city dwellers.
“The drainage system near the old provincial office was in poor condition, causing wastewater to flood the streets and create serious problems. Now that this project is being implemented properly, it will resolve these issues,” he said.
He also urged authorities to ensure high-quality construction standards.
Another resident, Ali Mohammad, expressed similar sentiment, emphasizing that Gardez city had been neglected in terms of urban development for years.
“The government and aid organizations should implement more reconstruction and expansion projects to improve the city’s infrastructure,” he said.
Municipal officials have assured that work on incomplete projects in the city will also resume in the near future.
