230 drug addicts rounded up in Ghazni

GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): Police have rounded up 230 drug addicts from various parts of southern Ghazni province, transferring them to a 500-bed hospital for treatment.

Police spokesperson Abu Khalid Sarhadi told Pajhwok Afghan News the Counter-Narcotics Department conducted a week-long campaign to identify and collect addicts from different areas.

During the drive, 230 drug addicts were collected from Ghazni City, Gilan, Maqur, Ab Band, Khwaja Omari, Andar, Qarabagh, Nawa, and Deh Yak districts and transferred to the rehabilitation facility, he said.

Sarhadi added the addicts would remain under medical supervision until their full recovery.

He added around 100 individuals, who had successfully completed their three-month treatment, were discharged from the facility last week.

A rehabilitated addict, Dawood, urged the caretaker government to create job opportunities for the treated individuals to prevent them relapsing into drug use.

The 500-bed addiction treatment centre, which started operations a year and a half ago, has treated approximately 1,400 individuals so far, with around 700 others currently under treatment.
