KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is set to vote tomorrow (Monday) on a draft resolution extending the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) until March 17, 2026.
The draft resolution renews UNAMA’s mandate for an additional year without changing its tasks and priorities, UNSC said in a statement.
The mission will continue to focus on human rights, particularly the rights of women and girls, Afghanistan’s economic and humanitarian situation, counterterrorism, drug trafficking and the condition of internally-displaced persons (IDPs).
Earlier, Islamic Emirate spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said the UN mission in Afghanistan had not been effective and accused it of presenting negative reports about the country.
He said: “UNAMA has provided negative reports about Afghanistan. Unfortunately, the inaccurate perceptions about Afghanistan within the United Nations have been shaped based on misleading information.”
Mujahid’s remarks came ahead of the UNSC’s scheduled meeting on Afghanistan on March 17, 2025.
