3.5m Afghan children at risk of malnutrition: WFP

KABUL (Pajhwok): The World Food Programme (WFP) has said that about 3.5 million children in Afghanistan will face malnutrition this year.

In a post on X, the WFP quoted Mutinta Chiuka, acting country director, as saying, “Afghanistan is currently experiencing the most severe child malnutrition crisis in its history, with 3.5 million children affected this year.”

She emphasised, “Every 10 seconds, a child falls into malnutrition, and the mothers—who should be nourishing the next generation—are themselves malnourished. This is not just a statistic; it’s a race against time, and we can still prevent it.”

Chiuka added, “We’ve done this before. With adequate funding, we can treat the malnutrition of both children and their mothers, providing them with the necessary food and nutrition to survive not just today, but for future generations.”
