KABUL (Pajhwok): More than two dozen people have lost their lives in a gun attack on tourists in the Indian-administered zone of Kashmir, say media reports.
At least 26 people were killed and many others injured in Tuesday’s gunfire, which coincided with a visit to India by US Vice President JD Vance, Dawn reported.
The assault occurred in the tourist resort of Pahalgam, police said, adding the victims included a navy officer and foreign tourists, The Hindu said.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi denounced the attack, promising that perpetrators of the heinous act would be brought to justice.
On a visit to Saudi Arabia at the time of the incident, Modi asked Home Minister Amit Shah to take all necessary measures in response to the incident.
Several Indian media outlets said The Resistance Front — a little known group — had claimed responsibility for the attack.
In a message from the Indian state of Jaipur, US Vice President Vance condoled with the victims.
He wrote on X: “Usha and I extend our condolences to the victims of the devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Over the past few days, we have been overcome with the beauty of this country and its people. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they mourn this horrific attack.”
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump assured India of full support. “Deeply disturbing news out of Kashmir. The United States stands strong with India against Terrorism.
“We pray for the souls of those lost, and for the recovery of the injured. Prime Minister Modi, and the incredible people of India, have our full support and deepest sympathies,” he wrote on Truth Social.
