QALA-I-NAW (Pajhwok): As much as 2.5 tonnes of expired food and non-food items have been torched in the capital of western Badghis province, an official said on Tuesday.

Mawlawi Khaliqdad Haqmal, head of monitoring and evaluation at the Public Health Department, said the items torched included 1.5 tonnes of food items, one tonne of medicines and other non-food goods collected from various parts of Qala-i-Naw city, the provincial capital.

He added the items were officially incinerated after medical examination and approval by the relevant commission to prevent their reuse.

Haqmal emphasised that monitoring of pharmacies, shops and food sale centres had been intensified in both the provincial capital and districts to prevent the sale of expired products.
