Zelensky to meet Trump for talks on ending Ukraine war

KABUL (Pajhwok): Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced he will meet his US counterpart, Donald Trump, in Florida on Sunday, as talks continue to seek an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine, according to media reports.

Announcing the meeting on Friday, Zelensky said the discussions could be decisive, as Washington intensifies its efforts to broker a resolution to Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II. “A lot can be decided before the New Year,” he said.

Zelensky confirmed he would raise the status of eastern Ukraine and the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which has been under Russian control since the early months of the invasion.

Moscow has demanded that Kyiv withdraw from parts of the Donetsk region still under Ukrainian control, as it seeks full authority over the wider Donbas area, which includes Donetsk and Luhansk.

Ukraine has rejected this demand, instead calling for an immediate halt to hostilities along the existing front lines.

Trump has positioned himself as a decisive figure in any potential agreement to end the war in Ukraine, downplaying Kyiv’s latest proposal ahead of the planned meeting with Zelensky.
