KABUL (Pajhwok): At least 13 people have been killed and nearly 100 injured after a train derailed in Mexico’s south-western Oaxaca region, media reports said on Monday.
The train, travelling between the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean, was carrying 241 passengers and nine crew members, the BBC reported.
A total of 98 people were injured, of whom 36 were receiving treatment in hospital, according to Mexico’s navy.
Officials said the train derailed as it rounded a bend near the town of Nizanda. Mexico’s Attorney General confirmed that an investigation is under way.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said five of those injured were in a serious condition.
Photos from the crash site showed rescue workers helping passengers from the train, which had fallen off the tracks and partly tilted over the side of a cliff.
