KABUL (Pajhwok): The Salang Highway, which connects Kabul with the northern provinces, has been reopened to passenger vehicles, an official said on Thursday.
Mohammad Ashraf Haqshenas, spokesman for the Ministry of Public Works (MoPW), stated on his X account that the key highway was reopened following continuous efforts by personnel from the Salang Maintenance and Protection Department.
Vehicles that had been stranded on both sides of the route were subsequently allowed to proceed.
He noted that snow-clearing operations were still ongoing to ensure safe passage for all vehicles.
He added that if snowfall and storm conditions subside, the highway will be fully reopened in both directions on Friday.
The Salang Highway had been temporarily closed to traffic on Tuesday due to heavy snowfall and a severe storm, a measure taken to prevent loss of life and financial damage.
