KABUL (Pajhwok): The European Union Commission says landmines and explosive remnants of war have killed or injured more than 45,000 people in Afghanistan over the past 37 years.
In a report published on Monday, EU Commission stated that since 1989, over 45,000 Afghan civilians have been killed or wounded by mines and unexploded ordnance.
The report noted: “Many of them are children chasing balls or tending livestock. Others are adults collecting firewood, caring for animals, or returning to homes they fled years ago.”
The commission emphasised its support for demining efforts in Afghanistan to allow communities to safely use land for agriculture, housing, and school construction.
The report added that EU also funds mine risk education and provides medical and rehabilitation support to survivors.
