IOM warns rising Afghanistan-Pakistan tensions threaten Afghan returnees

KABUL (Pajhwok): The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has expressed concern over the ongoing tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan, warning that the situation could further worsen conditions for Afghan returnees.

In a report, the organisation stated that continuing military clashes along the Durand Line have reportedly caused civilian casualties, damage to critical infrastructure and the displacement of nearly 66,000 people in eastern and south-eastern Afghanistan.

The IOM said these developments increase the risk of further displacement, accelerate returns, and exacerbate vulnerabilities in communities that are already overstretched and under-resourced.

The organisation added that any additional displacement caused by conflict or sudden large-scale returns would place severe pressure on local services, border infrastructure, and host communities, further straining already limited response capacities.

The IOM also confirmed that at least one of its transit centres in Nangarhar Province suffered significant collateral damage during the recent clashes.

According to the report, escalating tensions could heighten the risk of displacement, deportations and spontaneous returns from neighbouring countries, placing additional pressure on border provinces and humanitarian response systems.

The report emphasised that the protection of civilians, humanitarian workers and facilities must always be ensured.
