‘Wala Ye Mawlawi Sahib!’ – Afghan poetry collection inspired by moment of valor

KABUL (Pajhwok): A collection of nearly one hundred patriotic and nationalistic poems by various Afghan poets has been published under the title “Wala Ye Mawlawi Sahib (Take that, Mawlawi Sahib!)”.

In October 2025, Afghan forces carried out retaliatory attacks on Pakistani military posts along the Durand Line after Pakistani aircraft violated Afghan airspace and conducted airstrikes.

During these operations, an Afghan soldier called out to his comrade, saying, “Wala Ye Mawlawi Sahib (Take that, Mawlawi Sahib!)”. The video of this phrase quickly went viral on social media, and the sentence became widely popular.

Now, a collection of heroic poems has been published under the same title. Abdul Wahab Momand, who compiled the collection, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the compiler is young poet Mohammad Hassan Omari from Baghlan province. The collection spans 142 pages.

Momand said the book includes nearly 100 patriotic and nationalistic poems by contemporary and leading Afghan poets, highlighting themes of patriotism, bravery, unity and the protection of national values.

He added that the collection features notes and literary evaluations by writers such as Dad Mohammad Nawok, university professor and poet Gul Rahman Rahmani, and former Afghan ambassador to Pakistan, Mawlawi Abdulsalam Zaeef.

The book also includes exemplary poems by renowned Afghan poets, including Pir Mohammad Karwan and Ustad Fazl Wali Nagar.

“The poems have been evaluated from an artistic perspective, focusing on imagination, imagery, poetic expression, and intellectual structure,” Momand said. “Efforts have been made to present the topics in smooth, literary, and dignified language, with the main focus on love for the country, national dignity, unity and social cohesion.”

He emphasized that the work does not represent any official institution, government body, or political party, but is an independent literary initiative portraying national and patriotic themes through poetry.
