6 killed, 14 injured in Kyiv shooting

KABUL (Pajhwok): At least six people have been killed and 14 others injured after a gunman opened fire on pedestrians in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, according to media reports on Sunday.

The shooting occurred on Saturday in a district of Kyiv, where an armed man targeted pedestrians before taking refuge inside a supermarket and briefly holding hostages. Police later stormed the building and shot the suspect dead, Reuters reported.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his nightly address that the incident took place in the leafy Holosiivskyi district.

“He took hostages and, unfortunately, one of them was killed. Four people died on the street. One woman later died in hospital after sustaining serious injuries,” Zelensky said.

Ukraine’s Security Service has classified the incident as a possible act of terrorism, although authorities said the motive remains unclear.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said police launched an operation after around 40 minutes of unsuccessful negotiations with the attacker.

He added that the gunman, who legally possessed a registered firearm and had a medical permit for its use, opened fire on civilians without warning before entering the supermarket.

Authorities said investigations are ongoing, with the suspect’s communications and electronic devices being examined to establish the motive.
