HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): National horse-riding competitions have commenced in western Herat province, with organisers saying the event plays an important role in promoting sport, strengthening youth unity, and showcasing Afghanistan’s sporting potential.
According to Herat sports officials, the competition was inaugurated at the provincial equestrian field in the presence of athletes from 14 provinces, as well as government officials, diplomats, and a large number of local residents.
Mawlawi Ahmadullah Wasiq, Director-General of Physical Education and Sports, praised the organisers during the opening ceremony.
He highlighted Herat’s role in hosting major national events and reaffirmed continued support for athletes and the expansion of sporting activities across the country.
He added that such events make a significant contribution to the development of sport, fostering youth cohesion and highlighting the nation’s sporting capabilities.
Meanwhile, Mufti Abdul Rahim Rahmani, head of the Physical Education, Sports and Olympic Department in Herat, said hosting the national horse-riding competition reflects the province’s capacity and readiness to organise major sporting events.
He added that efforts had been made to ensure the competition is conducted in a fair, well-organised, and dignified manner for all participants.
Several competitors also welcomed Herat’s hosting of the event, noting that staging competitions in different provinces helps bring athletes and communities closer together.
Allah Dad Raufi, a participant from Jawzjan province, said that rotating venues for such competitions promotes greater interaction among athletes and increases familiarity between people from different provinces and ethnic backgrounds.
The event has been organised by the National Equestrian Federation in cooperation with the Herat Department of Physical Education, Sports and Olympic Affairs and the provincial equestrian federation. It is scheduled to continue for eight days.
