Woman freed after month-long confinement in Herat, 3 detained

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): A woman has been freed after nearly a month of confinement and domestic violence in Zawal district of western Herat province, the Department for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice said on Monday.

Sheikh Azizurrahman al-Muhajir, head of the department in Herat, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the woman’s husband was abroad, while her father-in-law and other family members allegedly kept her confined in a small room for about a month, with her hands and feet bound with chains.

He added that the woman was freed following efforts by department officials, and three individuals have been arrested in connection with the case.

According to him, the detainees have been referred to judicial and legal authorities for further proceedings.

Al-Muhajir also noted that the department had previously intervened in several similar cases in both the provincial capital and districts, with legal action taken against those responsible.
