Jalali, Russian envoy discuss expansion of health cooperation

KABUL (Pajhwok): Minister of Public Health Mawlawi Noor Jalal Jalali and Russian Ambassador in Kabul Dmitry Zhirnov have discussed expanding bilateral cooperation in the health sector, capacity building for Afghan doctors and the supply of quality medicines.

Jalali met Zhirnov and his accompanying delegation at his office, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) said in a statement.

It said both sides focused on strengthening cooperation in the health sector, particularly training and capacity building for Afghan specialists in cancer and heart diseases.

The two sides also discussed facilitating Afghan delegation visits to Russia for experience-sharing, importing quality medicines at affordable prices in the short term, and encouraging Russian investment in pharmaceutical production in Afghanistan.

Welcoming the Russian delegation, Jalali stressed the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation in the health sector, noting that Afghanistan and Russia enjoy good relations that have a positive impact on the health system.

He expressed Afghanistan’s interest in benefiting from Russia’s experience in healthcare.

For his part, the Russian ambassador said his country was ready to cooperate with Afghanistan in the health sector, including improving laboratory standards and building the capacity of Afghan doctors. He also said Russia would facilitate a visit by an Afghan delegation.

He also requested that Afghanistan share a list of required medicines and medical supplies.
