Uzbek president calls for closer, brotherly ties with Afghanistan

KABUL (Pajhwok): Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has called on officials and citizens of his country to strengthen a spirit of friendship and brotherhood with the people of Afghanistan.
Mirziyoyev made the remarks during a high-level meeting in Tashkent, where he stressed the strategic importance of bilateral cooperation and described Afghans as “hardworking and rich in culture,” Kun.uz reported.
He said stronger cooperation would benefit both nations, adding: “We must be their friends, brothers and neighbours.”
The Uzbek president also noted that the industrious nature of Afghans presents significant opportunities for shared economic growth.
According to the report, governors from various Uzbek regions attended the meeting.
Fergana governor Khayrullo Bozorov said his administration was intensively preparing investment and export projects targeting Afghanistan.
Andijan governor Shuhrat Abdurahmonov said a major export contract worth $1 billion had already been secured, of which $600 million in goods and services would be delivered in 2026.
Surkhandarya governor Ulugbek Qosimov highlighted the strategic role of his border province, saying Afghanistan was emerging as a key market for Uzbek exports.
He added that Surkhandarya aimed to reach $1 billion in total exports this year, with half of that volume directed to Afghanistan.
Afghanistan remains one of Uzbekistan’s main trade partners. In 2025, bilateral trade reached $1.678 billion, an increase of $540 million compared to 2024 and $811 million compared to 2023.
