Afghanistan, China connected via Wakhan road: Mansour

KABUL (Pajhwok): Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development Mullah Abdul Latif Mansour says basic construction work on the Wakhan road has been completed, linking Afghanistan to China via the corridor.

He made the remarks during a meeting with Chinese Ambassador Zhao Xing and his delegation in Kabul on Sunday, the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development said in a statement.

The Chinese envoy expressed satisfaction over the completion of the basic work on the Wakhan road and shared information about China’s ongoing activities and cooperation across Afghanistan.

He said China had implemented a number of major development and infrastructure projects in Afghanistan with high quality and would continue to carry out various projects in close coordination with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) in the future.

For his part, Mansour said Afghanistan was connected by land to all its neighbouring countries, but China had been the only country without a direct land route to Afghanistan until now.

He added: “Fortunately, the basic work on the Wakhan road has been completed, Afghanistan has been connected to China, and the remaining work is also under way.”

The minister said the people of Afghanistan welcomed the construction of the Wakhan road and urged China to increase cooperation in implementing infrastructure and development projects in the country, particularly in underserved areas with greater development needs.

He also called on the Chinese ambassador to help implement projects in underdeveloped regions where people are in greater need.
