KABUL (Pajhwok): The European Union (EU) has provided €15 million to the World Food Programme (WFP) to strengthen climate resilience and local food systems in Afghanistan, the UN agency said.

The WFP welcomed the contribution in a post on X, saying the funding would support efforts to strengthen climate resilience and local food systems across the country.

The agency said the assistance would also help protect livelihoods and create economic opportunities for women and young people.

According to the WFP, part of the funding will be used to strengthen its school food distribution programme in Afghanistan.

The UN agency did not provide details on the number of people expected to benefit from the assistance or the duration of the programmes to be implemented with the funding.

The EU contribution comes as Afghanistan continues to face challenges related to food security, livelihoods and the effects of climate change.
