KABUL (Pajhwok): US President Donald Trump said the war with Iran could be over “very quickly,” while Vice President JD Vance pointed to progress in ongoing negotiations with Tehran.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Tuesday, Trump said Iran was seeking an agreement and warned that if talks failed, the United States could launch new strikes in the coming days.
“We’re in a pretty good spot here,” Vance said during a White House briefing, describing the state of diplomatic discussions.
Trump’s remarks came a day after he said he had paused a planned resumption of hostilities following a new proposal from Tehran aimed at ending the conflict, Reuters reported.
“I was an hour away from making the decision to go today,” Trump said, adding that Iranian leaders were “begging for a deal.” He also warned that military action could follow within days if no agreement is reached.
Vance, speaking separately, said the US was “in a relatively good position,” but acknowledged that negotiations remain complicated due to divisions within Iran’s leadership and uncertainty over the stance of Iranian negotiators.
Meanwhile, amid these developments, two Chinese oil tankers carrying around four million barrels of crude oil transited the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday. The passage raised cautious hopes of easing tensions and a gradual stabilization of global oil shipping routes.
