Xi Jinping may visit North Korea next week, reports say

KABUL (Pajhwok): Chinese President Xi Jinping may visit North Korea as early as next week, according to reports on Thursday.

South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reported on Wednesday, citing a senior government official that President Xi Jinping could travel to North Korea in the coming week.

Another government source was cited as saying that a team of Chinese security and protocol officials recently visited Pyongyang, and that a visit by Xi in late May or early June is likely.

According to the official, Xi—who hosted US President Donald Trump last week—may attempt to act as a mediator between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

China is a key political and economic ally of North Korea, and the two countries have been working to strengthen ties that had cooled during the COVID-19 pandemic.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited Beijing last year and stood alongside Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin at a major military parade.
