KABUL (Pajhwok): One person was killed and 23 others injured after Russia launched a large-scale wave of missile and drone strikes on Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, on Sunday, according to a media report.

Explosions were heard across the city shortly after 1:00am, damaging residential buildings, schools and other urban infrastructure, Reuters reported.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram that one person was killed after a nine-storey residential building in the central Shevchenko district was struck. He added that emergency services were working at the scene to extinguish a fire.

In the same district, several people were reportedly trapped inside an air-raid shelter at a school after debris blocked its entrance, Klitschko said. The head of the city’s military administration said more people were also believed to be trapped inside a shelter at a business centre in the Shevchenko district.

According to the city’s military administration, 20 people were injured in the overnight attacks.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Russia was preparing to launch a strike using the Oreshnik missile system, citing intelligence from Ukraine, the United States, and European partners.

Russia has not yet commented on the details of the attacks.
