KABUL (Pajhwok): At least 16 students were killed and 79 others injured after a fire broke out at a girls’ school dormitory in central Kenya, a media report said on Friday.

The fire erupted at Utumishi Girls High School in Gilgil, Nakuru County on Thursday night, Al Jazeera reported.

Kenyan police said rescue and security teams were immediately dispatched to the scene following the incident.

They said at least 16 students lost their lives and 79 others were injured in the fire.

The cause of the blaze was not immediately known.

Kenya has a long history of school fires. According to government data, more than 60 cases of arson in public secondary schools were recorded in 2018 alone. Researchers have found that many of the fires were started by students protesting against harsh discipline and poor conditions.
