Death toll surges to 22, 36 injured as vehicle carrying returnees overturns in Laghman

MEHTHARLAM (Pajhwok): At least 22 people were killed and 36 others injured when a vehicle carrying returning refugees overturned on the Kabul–Jalalabad highway in eastern Laghman province, officials said.

The accident occurred on Saturday morning at around 5:30 a.m. near Sorkhkano Square in the Qarghayi district.

Earlier, the Laghman provincial Media and Public Relations Office reported that 18 people had been killed and 29 others injured, including 10 children, five women, and three men.

However, Nangarhar Public Health Director Mawlawi Aminullah Sharif told Pajhwok Afghan News that updated figures now confirm 22 fatalities and 36 injuries.

Officials said traffic and migration committee teams reached the scene shortly after the incident and launched rescue operations.

The injured have been transferred to health facilities in Nangarhar province for treatment.
