KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations and several countries have welcomed the finalisation of an agreement between Iran and the United States, describing it as an important and vital step towards the peaceful resolution of the conflict.

Iran and the United States announced on Monday morning that they had finalised an agreement, which is due to be formally signed in Switzerland on Friday.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said the script of a memorandum of understanding on negotiations to end the conflict between Iran and the United States had been finalised.

US President Donald Trump also wrote on Truth Social: “The agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to everyone!”

The development was welcomed by the United Nations and several countries around the world.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres wrote on X: “I warmly congratulate the United States and Iran on reaching a peace agreement that provides for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a framework for further negotiations. This is a vital step towards the peaceful resolution of the conflict.”

He also thanked Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and other regional countries for the constructive role they played in supporting the negotiations that led to the agreement.

Leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy (the E4 group) said in a joint statement that they would seize the opportunity and work closely with the United States, Iran and regional partners.

The E4 statement said: “We congratulate the United States, the Government of Iran and all those involved in this effort, including Pakistan, Qatar and other mediators, on this significant diplomatic achievement.”

The statement added that an opportunity had now emerged to restore regional stability and strengthen the global economy.

The European leaders called for the Iran–US memorandum to be implemented as quickly and comprehensively as possible.

They said the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, with unconditional and unrestricted freedom of navigation, was essential.

They also reaffirmed their support for the stability, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan welcomed the finalisation of the agreement between the United States and Iran, describing it as a key step towards regional peace.

He said he viewed the agreement positively and expressed hope that it would help create a lasting environment of peace and security.

Erdoğan also urged all parties to refrain from actions that could undermine the process before the agreement is formally signed.

In a statement, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the agreement between Tehran and Washington and praised the determination of both countries to resolve their differences through dialogue and peaceful means.

The ministry also described the role of regional and international mediators in reducing tensions and bringing the two sides closer together as positive and constructive.

Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif wrote on X: “We would like to thank the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran for their commitment to finding a diplomatic solution to this conflict.”

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon also wrote on X: “New Zealand welcomes the agreement between the United States and Iran announced this morning — a positive step towards reducing tensions and strengthening global stability.”

According to a statement issued by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, the memorandum was finalised following several months of difficult and intensive negotiations.

Under the agreement, hostilities and military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon, will end immediately and permanently, while the naval blockade against Iran will be fully lifted.
