KABUL (Pajhwok): Spain, Portugal and Switzerland have secured their places in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after winning their respective Round of 32 matches.
Spain recorded a dominant 3-0 win over Austria. Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice, while Pedro Porro added the third goal as the Spaniards controlled the match from start to finish.
Portugal edged Croatia 2-1 in a closely contested encounter. Cristiano Ronaldo equalised from the penalty spot before Gonçalo Ramos struck a stoppage-time winner to seal Portugal’s place in the next round.
Switzerland also advanced with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Algeria. Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye were on target to secure qualification for the Swiss side.
Spain will now face Portugal in the Round of 16, while Switzerland will take on the winner of the Colombia–Ghana clash.
