KABUL (Pajhwok): US President Donald Trump has imposed a 50 percent tariff on a wide range of Canadian imports worth nearly $20 billion, according to a media report on Tuesday.
The tariffs will take effect on August 19 and apply to products including wine, cement, ice hockey equipment, dairy products, furniture, swimming pools, clothing, fishing gear and wigs, Reuters reported.
The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) said the affected goods account for around 5.2 percent of the $382 billion worth of US imports from Canada in 2025.
Trump invoked Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, which allows the US president to impose retaliatory tariffs of up to 50 percent on countries accused of discriminating against American goods.
Reuters reported that this was the first known use of the provision in nearly a century.
The US administration cited Canada’s dairy supply management system, tariffs and quotas on American-made vehicles, and the suspension of US alcoholic beverage sales in most Canadian provinces as reasons for the decision.
Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Ottawa had presented comprehensive proposals to resolve trade disputes with Washington and remained prepared for intensive negotiations.
Several major Canadian exports, including energy, potash, fish and critical minerals, have been exempted from the new tariffs.
