KABUL (Pajhwok): Herat officials and Iran’s consul general have discussed measures to boost cross-border trade, improve transit facilities and advance joint economic projects, including the Herat–Khaf railway.

In a statement on X, the Herat governor’s office said Sheikh Maulana Islam Jar, governor of Herat, held talks with Iran’s Consul General Ali Reza Marhamati in Herat.

The statement said the discussions focused on strengthening trade ties, speeding up the movement of commercial goods through Islam Qala port, increasing border capacity for commercial vehicles and easing visa procedures for Afghan citizens.

Islam Jar stressed the need for improved facilities for commercial vehicles at the border and simpler visa processes to encourage legal travel and expand trade activities.

Marhamati said Iran remained committed to enhancing trade cooperation with Afghanistan, adding that border coordination, development of the Herat–Khaf railway and visa facilitation were key areas for strengthening bilateral relations.

The two sides agreed to expand cooperation in economic, trade and transit sectors, facilitate legal movement of citizens and follow up on issues raised during the meeting.
