KABUL (Pajhwok): The United States says it has carried out missile strikes on Iran in response to missile attacks by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on US forces in Jordan a day earlier, while Iranian authorities say residential areas were hit in the strikes.
The IRGC said on Wednesday that it had launched ballistic missiles at a US airbase and the headquarters of the US Central Command (CENTCOM) in Jordan in response to US military actions.
In a post on X, CENTCOM said it had carried out strikes against IRGC positions in retaliation for the attacks.
The command said the strikes targeted IRGC military command centres, missile and drone facilities, coastal surveillance and defence sites, as well as naval capabilities inside Iran.
CENTCOM added that the operation was aimed at reducing threats posed by Iran and its “proxy forces” against US troops, commercial shipping and neighbouring Gulf states.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Fars news agency, citing Hormozgan University of Medical Sciences, reported that three people were killed and two others injured after a residential house in the Chahtangu neighbourhood of Qeshm city was hit during the US strikes.
The victims included a couple and their two-year-old child, while two other children, aged seven and nine, were wounded, the report said.
It added that the injured children were transferred to hospital for treatment.
