KABUL (Pajhwok): Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs on US goods after Washington imposed a 50 percent levy on $20 billion worth of Canadian products.

Al Jazeera reported that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Saturday the new tariffs, targeting US steel, dairy, electronics and other sectors, would take effect on September 8.

“Canada will match Washington’s new tariffs dollar for dollar” to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses, Carney told reporters in Ottawa.

The announcement followed the collapse of trade talks between the two countries late Friday, further straining relations between the longtime allies.

US President Donald Trump’s tariffs cover goods including wine, furniture, dairy products, cement, clothing, fishing rods and hockey equipment, affecting about 5.5 percent of Canadian exports to the US.

Carney said Washington had presented “uneconomic” and “unfair” conditions that Canada could not accept, including restrictions on its ability to negotiate new trade deals.

He said Canada’s response would also cover US appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and other products. Details of the measures will be announced in the coming days.
