KABUL (Pajhwok): The United States plans to re-establish a Cold War-era military base in southern Greenland and set up a military presence at an eastern outpost under a new security agreement with Denmark and Greenland.
According to Reuters, citing three people familiar with the matter, the agreement would expand Washington’s military presence on the island. It is expected to be signed on Tuesday at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
One of the sites is Narsarsuaq in southern Greenland, where the US operated the Bluie West One military base during the Cold War before closing it in the 1950s.
The second site is Mestersvig in eastern Greenland, a military outpost currently used by Denmark’s Sirius Dog Sled Patrol.
Denmark, Greenland and the United States are expected to sign the agreement at 10:30 a.m. ET (1430 GMT) on Tuesday.
The text of the agreement has not been made public. The three people familiar with the deal, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said its details had not been finalized ahead of the signing.
A White House spokesperson declined to comment on the details of the agreement, reiterating an earlier statement that it’s signing would “secure and defend the security of Greenland and the United States.”
