JALALABAD (PAN): Tribal elders from Behsud, Sararud and Chaparhar districts of eastern Nangarhar province have demanded the government should establish security check-posts in the districts.

The elders made the demand at a meeting with Governor Gul Agha Sherzai at his office on Saturday.

“These districts are the scenes of frequent militants attacks and clashes between the insurgents and local and foreign insurgents,” Chparhar district development committee head, Malak Muhkam Khan, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said the district had 49 policemen who were unable to provide security for the entire district. He said they had already asked the governor to order the establishment of security posts in Parkand, Sri Qala and Mulla Sahib areas.

Malak Nader Khan, a tribal elder from Sheikh Misri town of Sararud district, said a 10-kilometer uneven road in the town had a bad impact on the area’s security situation.

He said they had asked the governor to establish police posts west of the town to stop insurgent infiltration from eastern Khogyani district.

Another tribal elder Malak Nasir Alokozai from Behsud district said since Behsud district, lying along the Jalalabad-Torkham highway, was relatively a peaceful area, where a number of development projects were in progress, but Chaparhar district in the east was making it vulnerable to insurgent attacks.

The governor had invited tribal elders to point out vulnerable areas and make a combine operation plan, his spokesman, Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, said.

He added the governor promised the elders that problems in their areas would be resolved.

He said Sherzai had made an appeal to the President and the Minister of Interior to increase the number of police in the three districts.
