MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PAN): Youngsters, chanting slogans against corruption, participated in a race in Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of northern Balkh province, an official said on Friday.
Clad in white, up to 200 youth took part in the two-kilometre race against graft from the main city square to the Shrine of Hazrat Ali (RA).
An international anti-graft watchdog, Transparency International, recently declared Afghanistan, North Korea and Somalia as the world’s top most corrupt countries.
An organiser of the event, Mukhtar Wafai, told Pajhwok Afghan News the Afghans were ashamed of being seen as the most corrupt country. Corruption had an all-time high in the country and the people of the Balkh wanted the scourge to be eliminated.
“Not a single department in the province is free of graft,” Wafai claimed, saying the objective behind the race — attended by teenage boys in the cold weather — was to raise awareness against the menace.
Qurban Ali, who won the race, said he was happy with his participation in the fight against corruption. He called for determined efforts against corruption at all levels. PAJHWOK/ Akbari
